Ten Tiny Breaths

Ten Tiny Breaths
by K.A Tucker
Rating: 3 Bows!

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

This is the first NA book that I have picked up that's not strictly romance so after reading it, I wasn't sure how I felt about it. It's not that this was a terrible book, because it wasn't. It was pretty great in fact. The writing was mature and simple and K.A Tucker was able to clearly explain the feelings and emotions of all her character beautifully. Her character were well had their own personality and had were not over shadowed by the main hero/heroine.

As to why I don't know how I feel about this book? It was a whirlwind of emotions. I know, I know, that's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact we want to feel emotions, but this was just a tad too much for me because I've never read a book with the concept like Ten Tiny Breaths. This is the first book that I've read that I've had to stop and grab tissues and give myself a moment to collect my thoughts. From the first page your brought straight into the life of Kacey Cleary and it's not a pretty one.

Reading through everything that she's been through broke my heart. I admired Kacey for the strength she had, she took responsibility of her sister and did everything to provide a life for themselves. But Kacey is broken and not willing to get help so this makes her cold and reserved to open up to anyone, until she meets Trent. Trent was sweet, protective and is completely devoted to help Kacey. He will do anything to help her and I mean anything...

"I want to make you smile. For real. Always. We're going to go for dinners, and see movies, and walk on the beach. We'll go hang-gliding, or bungee jumping, or whatever you want to do. Whatever makes you smile and laugh more...Let me make you smile."

When I thought Kacey finally finds a bright light at the end of the tunnel in Trent, I was relieved because I hoped that the book would take a lighter turn...I was so wrong. Trent is just as broken as Kacey, and has secrets that affect them both.

When I finished Ten Tiny Breaths I was emotionally exhausted; My heart hurt so much and I was so sad with everything that had happened. I was not expecting a happy ending filled with rainbows and butterflies, how could I? However, then ending was perfect, there is no other way that I could have pictured the book ending. It was not sad, it was not happy, it was an ending that leaves you with hope, hope that no matter how hard and terrible life has been, there is always a way to be happy.

I would recommend this book to those readers that are emotionally strong and to those readers that are trying to look for something more mature and intense to read. K.A Tucker wrote a beautiful heart wrenching story with a great message that has touched my heart and will forever stay with me.
